BIOGRAPHY

As at 2025 Susan has over 25 years' experience in Thought Leadership, Marketing, PR, Publishing & Editorial, IP & Knowledge Management, Writing & Ghostwriting, including roles as Commissioning Editor at a London publishing house, as a Marketing Analyst, as a Knowledge Manager, and as a lecturer in Intellectual Property and Pitching for Publication. Having developed an interest in the notion of Sustainable Finance & Investment initially through a Client, Susan retrained in Investment & Finance, gaining in 2018 a PGCert in Real Estate Finance & Investment covering Modern Portfolio Theory, Economics and Development Finance, but originally trained in Architecture (University of Newcastle), also holding Masters degrees with Distinction in Visual Theory (philosophy of aesthetics, University of East London) and in Interior Design (University of Westminster).

She found she was especially interested in Socially Responsible Investment and since then continues to expand her knowledge of Green Finance & SRI, as well as ethical and environmental issues, through continued educational/professional development including certifications in Principles of Sustainable Finance and Behavioural Finance and most recently in Environmental Leadership. She is currently undertaking a course in Sustainable Corporate Finance covering all aspects of ethical/sustainable corporate finance from Integrated Value Creation through Valuing Bonds & Equity, Risk-Return Analysis, Capital Markets and ethical Mergers & Acquisitions. She hopes this learning will prove useful to Clients in terms of helping them bridge the gaps between ethics and finance, as well as personally fascinating.

In terms of professional background, and finding after her initial degree that of her dual skillsets in design and writing, her writing skills had the edge, she moved first into an early career as a Commissioning Editor at a respected scholarly publishing house in Bloomsbury, then Notting Hill, London, where she devised, developed and managed a new Publishing List including 3 Key Series, commissioning and guiding innumerable respected authors. She also undertook in London various other roles and freelance contracts in both illustrated design book and in magazine publishing, and as a ghostwriter and Editorial Consultant.

Returning for a time to the Built Environment sector, Susan held roles as Knowledge Manager and then as Marketing Analyst & In-House Writer & PR liaison (first within a London-based engineering firm and then with a leading Building Consultancy) where her remits included devising, pitching and ghostwriting innumerable Thought Leadership features for company Directors placed within the industry press.

Susan's published writing ranges from work published under her own name in her early career in arts publishing through full-length books and innumerable Longform features ghostwritten for Clients within the Built Environment sector mid-career (also a book within the not-for-profit sector) alongside developing an expertise in Social Value statements during that time. Since 2019 her focus has shifted fully to Sustainable Finance & Ethical Business (although with an ongoing interest in ethical Real Estate), including writing investor-facing materials for a New York Investment Fund focused on impactful tech investments within Emerging Markets and who actively distinguished themselves from Wall Street. She is now focused on working with companies at the forefront of Ethical Business and Sustainable Finance (and, ideally, bridging the gaps between them).

Based in Yorkshire, UK, Susan remains an adopted Londoner at heart (having lived there for 15 years) but largely now works nationally and internationally via Zoom et al while enjoying the perks of the Yorkshire countryside. Alongside Ethical Business and Sustainable Finance, she also maintains strong interests in Architecture, Design and Real Estate, in Contemporary Art and Art History, and in Design, Antiques and Wine, all of which she still enjoys writing about in the Alt Invests & other Fun(ds) Column at the end of each edition of The STOCKtake!

"Susan provided valuable insights into the marketing industry's evolving relationship with AI technology, helping inform our understanding of both the opportunities and challenges faced in this transition."

- Nigel Jobson, Maybe* CCO
"Susan Lawson came in, right from the start, with pertinent and accurate comments about the whole process…She patiently dealt with my inexperience, helping me pull together my ideas into a structure that had a proper logical order...she seemed at ease with the subject matter and asked well-targeted and pertinent questions, and provided ideas on where to look for the answers. Some of her questions helped me to articulate ideas that were still unformed in my mind at the start of the process. Susan has had a tremendously valuable role in helping make this book relevant."

- GW, Award-Winning London Fund Manager

"As far as the writing of this book is concerned, I am most grateful to my editor, Susan Lawson, for saving me from myself on more than one occasion and for her good-natured support throughout."
